Perdita Durango Movie Review

Watch Perdita Durango Online

Adapted from Barry Gifford’s novel “59 Degrees and Raining: The Story of Perdita Durango”, the film Perdita Durango is somewhat a take off from David Lynch’s ‘Wild at Heart’ though it is not a sequel to the film, which was also based on a novel by Gifford. In the former film, towards the end, we are introduced to a character ‘Perdita Durango’ and it is this character that director Alex de la Iglesias chooses to portray in his film.

Perdita Durango, played by Rosie Perez, is a ruthless maniac who does not live by the rules; instead she makes rules of her own. She is strong, uncaring, violent and enjoys life in her own daring way. Much worse is her lover, Romeo Dolorosa (Javier Bardem) who is a demonic character, a staunch follower of the ancient Santeria religion that believes in human sacrifice in exchange for good luck and prosperity. He is a murderer, robber, a cannibal, a walking evil.

Romeo’s character almost overshadows that of Perdita Durango and she knows she has met her match, but she is truly smitten by this man. Other characters include a mob leader Santos, who assigns the two the job of driving a tanker loaded with human fetuses across the border from Mexico to Texas. Romeo and Perdita have to safely drive this consignment to be delivered to a cosmetic industry that needs the fetuses for their facial creams.

As is his religion, Romeo wants to carry out a human sacrifice before setting out on this mission. We have already seen him dissecting human corpses and eating their vital organs in front of a watching audience, but this time it is live human sacrifice that is decided upon. The two kidnap teenage sweethearts Duane and Estelle for the sacrifice, but before that the college students are raped by their kidnappers, which they later begin to enjoy.

The kids are rescued just before the sacrifice, as Romeo and Perdita have been followed closely by a DEA agent along with cops and a former betrayed accomplice of Romeo. There is a lot of action with shootouts and violence and point-blank murders and of course a lot of stimulating sex scenes. The movie has been shot at excellent locales and has a good background score. Gruesome though it is, the film is well-directed and the actors fit into their characters brilliantly.
